took a long walk in the woods made my way down to the sea listened to the water and the wind whisper their secrets up here on the coast of alaska you keep your eyes open wide there is a stillness in the air there are treasures in the tide walking down the beach the only soul for miles around just me and this crazy crow who says he's California bound later in the year when the sky turns grey later in the year when the geese are gone when the mountain slides behind the clouds and the winter sings its icy song later in the year when my friends have flown and the lonely runs so deep it's dark as darkness gets the sun is fast asleep i don't want to stay here (said the crow) i'm losing my way here (said the crow) everyone's leaving everyone's leaving once upon a different time i'd have stayed forever listening to the thundering sea searching for my treasures and when i'd find that perfect shell i'd lay it down beside her and we would sit in silent prayer waiting on winter later in the year when the sky turns grey later in the year when the geese are gone when the mountain slides behind the clouds and the winter sings its icy song later in the year when my friends have flown and the lonely runs so deep it's dark as darkness gets the sun is fast asleep i don't want to stay here (said the crow) i'm losing my way here (said the crow) everyone's leaving everyone's leaving i don't want to stay here ii don't want to stay here i don't want to stay here took a long walk in the woods wound up sitting by the sea with a black crow and a white shell a black crow and a white shell a black crow and a white shell © 2015 blue mole music/BMI

i live on a dirt road i've got me a good dog my baby loves me and still i complain i don't understand it the sky could not be more blue i'm walking in sunshine thinking about rain now you'd think i’d know better being quite the smart fellow tell me your problems i'll fix you right up but I'm a little funny when it comes to my life i was born to worry am i worried enough? face in the mirror judge and jury finds me guilty of most everything I feel i wake up in the morning tired as an old boat adrift on a river with no paddle wheel even when i’m happy i sense the danger the invisible sorrow hiding in the joy i want to thank my mother and sister mary aloysius for making me the good man who will always be that boy face in the mirror judge and jury find me guilty of most everything I feel i wake up in the morning tired as an old boat adrift on a river with no paddle wheel every time I say "i love you" i get a little bit nervous she's going to laugh and it's going to break my heart and then she says "I love you, too" and the dark clouds drift away momentary rainbows like they’ve been there from the start i live on a dirt road i've got me a good dog and my baby loves me yeah, my baby loves me she loves me and my good dog we’re a couple of lucky dogs in love with my baby…. © 2014 blue mole music/BMI

if i could paint you a picture of somewhere like italy now there’s a place of romance i will tell you what you’d see you’d see a perfect little me taking the big chance and when i painted the moon i’d paint it half gone but hoping this half is brighter and when things could go either way i’d give myself the chance to say right or wrong sometimes there’s only now that’s how the garden grows it doesn’t wonder how like a moth to a flame you draw me closer and it gets brighter i’ll put my secrets in your hand and you can burn me where i stand right or wrong sometimes there’s only now that’s how the garden grows it doesn’t wonder how and a hundred years from now in someone else’s eyes a crumbling garden wall the secrets of the kind if i could paint you a picture of somewhere like italy i’d put my secrets in your hand and you could burn me where i stand right or wrong sometimes there’s only now that’s how the garden grows it doesn’t wonder how ce sia bene o sia male no so ma tutto il tempo que abiamo e soltanto adesso come in questo giardino che cresce e non chiede mai che stagione farà if i could paint you a picture of somewhere like italy © 1999 blue mole music/BMI Italian lyric by Stefano Barotti

i could sit right here forever then i could sit a little more when i have you here beside me i want for nothing more the moment that you look my way is the moment that i breathe you are everything i want you are everything i need OK, maybe that’s a bit romantic but i’m a romance guy i drive around and look for words to sing about your eyes and i hope it does impress you god, it sure impresses me that you are everything i want you are everything i need come away with me i know i secret place just the dog and me and you gone without a trace gone without a word spilt for unknown parts who’d ever find us here wrapped up inside these hearts? this is the best of me here is the best i’ll be now i’m getting all mccartney all flowers and violins the happy fool up on the hill who just stares at you and grins and tells you of his devotion and how your love will always be everything i want everything i need come away with me i know i secret place just the dog and me and you gone without a trace gone without a word spilt for unknown parts who’d ever find us here wrapped up inside these hearts? this is the best of me here is the best i’ll be who cares if it’s just this song i’m singing for one someone? © 2005 blue mole music/BMI

steal light 04:27
you don’t believe a thing you tell me but you tell me anyway it might be something beautiful i can’t really say cuz god don’t listen if you’re lying when you’re praying something everybody knows something ain’t nobody saying now i’ve got a simple explanation for the ordinary man but it’s a mission quite impossible if you don’t understand how it feels when you’re good how it cuts when you fall you make it all complicated, man it ain’t complicated don’t stare long at a rising sun steal light for when the day is done buy into the myth jump into the fire tell me what you want tell me your every heart’s desire tell it to the breeze tell it to the sea tell it to your mama they’ve all listened to me cuz i was there at the beginning i’m gonna be there in the end looking for a chance to introduce myself again let me take your coat let me take your time i’ll catch you later, baby sooner of later don’t stare long at a rising sun steal light for when the day is done so what are you gonna do? where you gonna run? how are you gonna know if there is something wonderful you need to feel? man, you can’t feel anything i look deep in your eyes nothing don’t stare long at a rising sun steal light for when the day is done © 1999 blue mole music/BMI

when the sun beats down on the icy little town the icy little town turns to water there’s nothin’ you can do when the river runs through but hope your life isn’t in the way you’re feeling all alone your angels have flown the devil is tapping at your window so you run back to bed blanket over your head and pray that you can dream it all away today is today tomorrow's tomorrow yesterday's buried in the ground you make big plans and right before they come together life comes circling around and bites you life comes circling around hey diddle diddle there's a kitty with a fiddle and a doggie laughin' pretty loud is it the cow or the moon? or the dish and the spoon? it doesn't really matter it's all funny all the rhymes you were read when you was a little kid supposed to teach you how to get along it's a bummer when you learn that you'll probably get burned cuz in the end it's all about the money today is today tomorrow's tomorrow yesterday's buried in the ground you make big plans right before they come together life comes circling around and bites you life comes circling around oh my my some days it doesn’t pay to stumble out of bed oh my yes life gets messy but you’ve got to believe you can dig your way out of the mess put your nose to the stone work your fingers to the bone don't worry about the man behind the curtain no, all you need to do is to muddle on through and find a way to keep your head out of the oven and you know that little spark lyin' in the dark? well, that's the one thing you should believe in keep wishin' on stars and know in your heart all that really matters is the lovin' all that matters is the love today is today tomorrow's tomorrow yesterday's buried in the ground you make got big plans and right before they come together life comes circling around and bites you life comes circling around (c) 2015 blue mole music

the heat 05:33
it's a warm winter evening in south california south california where the pretty folk play on white sandy beaches by sparkling blue water and big fancy houses where they shoo me away these worn out old shoes make a road hard to travel it 's been a hard road to travel from my wintery home where the frozen rain whispers "there's no need to stay here there's nothin' to hold you all your reasons are gone" she started a fire that no longer burns when a heart flies that far away it don't ever return we're just two winding roads that no longer meet she started a fire and i'm still feelin' the heat i've got to keep movin' i'm like a man with secret a man with a secret that he don’t want to say just another sad tale about a heart that's fully broken and a billion bright stars will not wish that away she started a fire that no longer burns when a heart flies that far away it don't ever return we're just two winding roads that no longer meet she started a fire and i'm still feelin' the heat i'm a lonely old fool but i used to be a young one i used to be so young man, i knew everything but time is for learning and, lord, i've learned me a lifetime and a life without love it don’t mean a thing she started a fire that no longer burns when a heart flies that far away it don't ever return we're just two winding roads that no longer meet she started a fire and i'm still feelin' the heat © 2014 blue mole music/BMI

winter song 04:00
there is a winter song it’s very dear to me it sings of joy and peace comfort and harmony and when everything’s done and been said and there’s nothing left of me there’ll be a winter song dear to me it is a common tale wrapped in a fantasy and from the top on down it winks and it blinks and it shines on me it tells my heart to be strong the best is yet to be it is a winter song dear to me there is a hill to climb the one that tomorrow brings and i’d fly right to the top, yeah if i only had the wings but when everything’s shadows and fear and there’s no path to see there’ll be winter song dear to me and when i’m standing tall tall as a man can be and i am looking around at all that has come to me there will be stars in my sky i will blessed be there was a winter song someone sang to me sing to me © 1999 blue mole music/BMI

about

“Much like the folkier side of Paul Simon, who seems a clear mentor, Michaels’ lyrical skills allow him to be reflective and wry in his crafty word-play...The tunes throughout are always clever, mostly upbeat, but never sappy -- wine sipping rather than beer drinking music.”
Roots Music Report

Jaime Michaels has a new album called “once upon a different time.” This time around marks a return to all original music following the success of Jaime’s previous release, the mostly covers benefit album “unknown blessings,” which to date has raised thousands of dollars for the music camp for at risk teens sponsored by the Kerrville Folk Festival Foundation.

“once upon a different time” again pairs Jaime with producer Jono Manson, their eighth collaboration. The cast of supporting players gathered from around the world includes, among others, fellow songwriters David Berkeley & Melissa Greener (vocals) and the Phil Lesh band’s Jason Crosby (keyboards and violin), in addition to the usual cast of players assembled at Jono’s Kitchen Sink Studio in New Mexico.

Jaime’s originals employ a wide palette of sounds & rhythms, stories & rhymes. The songs range from the heartfelt ballad “crazy for me” to the rocking word play of “steal light,” which imagines a conversation between god and the devil, although it is not always clear just who is saying what. Jaime makes his bouzouki debut on the wonderfully rolling title track which tells the tale of a crow left to guard the homestead when his flock flies south escaping a cold Alaskan winter.

On the track “warming,” Jaime manages to include concerns about climate change & income inequality, reflections on the collapse of the ottoman empire at the end of world war one, some hopes for the future and a pineapple joke. “somewhere like italy” touches upon the beauty of right now while “the heat” tells its beautiful tale of love lost in three quarter time. The album ends with “singing for my supper,” the story of Jaime’s musical life told in a bluegrassy 2 minutes and 35 seconds. It’s a return to form for Jaime with brilliant writing and great playing
all tied together with Manson’s sublime production.

The album is available in Europe on Italy’s Appaloosa Records and in the U.S. on fumdahart/con artisti.

“Jaime writes songs with special meanings. . .with a sense of purpose, a sense of belief that
music is as critical to life as breathing itself.” Wanda Adams Fischer/WAMC
